Great Laptop, September 8, 2011 By DJ (NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 15.6" Notebook PC (Personal Computers) I've had this for about a little under a year. I'm a die-hard Lenovo fan ever since the T40 series. I fix and repair plenty of laptops and always try to persuade everybody interested in a laptop to check out Lenovo. They are one of the few manufacturer's that supply common replacement parts. I've sent plenty of Dell's and HP's to the landfill over a broken power jack. They solder their's directly to the pcb. Lenovo sells replacement power jacks usually for around $8-12. They screw right onto the pcb and easily plug in. Although this isn't the case for every Lenovo model, it's generally very common with lenovo laptops (especially the Thinkpad series).
Even if you're not going to tackle a fix like that yourself, it's much cheaper to have your repair facility fix a small component than it is an entire motherboard because of one faulty part ($12 component vs $378 motherboard).

I had used older Thinkpads previously and heard they were still top of the line, so I decided to try this one, rather than an Acer which seems to be very popular with home users and the younger generation now. This laptop is a dream. Beautiful, professional, classy. Boots up in less than 60 seconds. Runs cool. Has a nice number pad right on the keyboard. Trackpoint is great- not too touchy like Acers. Keys feel lovely. Said to weigh 11 pounds but feels more like 5 to me due to its elegant design. Right now running Windows 7 on it, with plans to install Ubuntu Linux. Setup was extremely simple, almost painfully so! I have had this laptop about 3 weeks now. When I have spent more time on it, I will try to write up a more detailed review, however I'm extremely happy with this E520!
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful great keyboard and performance, June 24, 2011 This review is from: Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 15.6" Notebook PC (Personal Computers) I've had this computer for about 4 weeks and it is working and performing great with Java applets, VPN's, Access Database, Excel, Outlook all working with impressive simultaneous performance and runs much cooler than my older Dell running Vista. This computer has good quality and seems simplistically durable, no frills design, middle performer that hits a large market segment for the above average business user at a reasonable price. I just may buy more of these for other colleagues if the performance and reliability stays consistent.
